The LSAT Logical Reasoning format uses short passages followed by one question and five answer choices. On the current LSAT, two Logical Reasoning sections count toward your score, so the skill matters across a large share of the multiple-choice test. The current LSAT Logical Reasoning format
The multiple-choice LSAT has four 35-minute sections:
- Two scored Logical Reasoning sections
- One scored Reading Comprehension section

There is a 10-minute intermission after the second section. Because the variable section is not identified, treat every section as scored.
A Logical Reasoning section typically contains about 24 to 26 questions. You may see two LR sections if the variable section is Reading Comprehension, or three LR sections if the variable section is Logical Reasoning.
There is also a separate LSAT Argumentative Writing task. You need an approved writing sample on file for score release, but you do not need to complete a new one if you already have a still-valid approved sample.

What an LR question looks like
Every Logical Reasoning question has these basic parts:
- Stimulus: A short argument, fact pattern, disagreement, or principle.
- Question stem: The task you must perform.
- Five answer choices: One choice best performs the task specified by the stem.
The stimulus may discuss public policy, medicine, art, business, history, or ordinary decisions. The subject is usually a wrapper around the reasoning. You are not being asked whether you like the conclusion or know facts about the topic.
Use this quick argument map:
- Conclusion: What does the author want you to believe?
- Premises: What support does the author give?
- Gap: What has to be true for that support to justify the conclusion?
For example:
> A restaurant’s online ratings rose after it introduced a new menu. Therefore, the new menu caused the ratings to rise.
The evidence is that the menu change came before the ratings increase. The conclusion is that the menu caused the increase. The gap is that another change could explain the ratings, or the apparent relationship may not show causation at all.
That gap drives many flaw, weaken, strengthen, and assumption questions.
The main LSAT Logical Reasoning question types
Prep books may use slightly different labels. The work required by the question stays much the same.
Flaw questions
Flaw questions ask what goes wrong in the argument’s reasoning. Frequent patterns include:
- Treating an association as proof of causation
- Generalizing from an unrepresentative sample
- Taking a necessary condition as sufficient
- Inferring a condition from its consequence
- Confusing a group with one of its subgroups
- Assuming the point that needs to be proved
A good prediction is specific: “The argument treats this evidence as enough to establish that conclusion, without addressing this missing possibility.” Avoid vague labels such as “the evidence is weak.”
Strengthen and weaken questions
These questions ask which answer most improves or damages the support for the conclusion.
For a causal argument, look for competing explanations. A strengthener may rule out an alternative cause or show that the supposed cause reliably precedes the effect. A weakener may introduce another explanation, show that the effect appeared first, or show the claimed cause often occurs without the effect.
You are not proving the conclusion true or false. You are judging how the new fact changes the argument’s support.
Necessary and sufficient assumption questions
An assumption is an unstated idea the argument relies on.
A necessary assumption must be true for the argument to work. Use the negation test: negate an answer choice. If the argument collapses, that choice may be necessary.
A sufficient assumption is strong enough to make the conclusion follow. These answers often build a direct bridge from the premises to the conclusion and can sound more forceful than a necessary-assumption answer.
Must be true and most strongly supported questions
These are inference questions, not argument-repair questions.
For must be true, choose only what follows from the statements given. Strong answer language such as “all,” “never,” and “only” needs equally strong support in the stimulus.
For most strongly supported, the answer does not need certainty, but it must have better support than its competitors. Outside knowledge does not help.
Method, role, and argument-part questions
These ask how the argument works.
You may need to identify the role of a statement, the method used, a point at issue between speakers, or the function of an example. Summarize the structure before reading the choices:
> The author rejects a proposal by arguing that its promised benefit would occur anyway.
That summary gives you something concrete to match.
Principle and parallel questions
Principle questions ask you to apply or justify a general rule. Match each condition in the rule. An answer can sound fair or sensible while failing to fit the facts.
Parallel questions test structure. Strip away the topic and compare the reasoning pattern. For example:
> All licensed architects have completed an approved training program. > Priya has completed an approved training program. > Therefore, Priya is a licensed architect.
The problem is that it infers a condition from its consequence: completing the training is required for licensed architects, but it does not establish that everyone who completes it is licensed. The correct parallel answer will make the same logical move, even if it concerns a completely different subject.
Timing: how to use 35 minutes well
Since the question count can vary, calculate your average pace from the section in front of you:
35 minutes ÷ number of questions = average time per question
For a 25-question section, that works out to about 1 minute and 24 seconds per question. Treat that as an average, not a limit. A direct inference question may take less than a minute; a difficult parallel-flaw question can take longer.
Try a three-pass approach:
- First pass: Answer questions that become clear after a focused read. If you cannot identify the conclusion or task quickly, flag it.
- Second pass: Return to questions where you see the issue but need time to separate two choices.
- Final pass: Ensure every question has an answer. Change an answer only when you have a concrete reason.
A useful checkpoint is to divide the section into five-question blocks. In a 25-question practice section, finishing about five questions every seven minutes keeps you near pace.
Do not force a rigid one-minute rule. Extra time is worthwhile only when you know what you are trying to resolve.
A fully worked flaw-question walkthrough
Here is an original LSAT-style question.
Stimulus: Employees who reported drinking tea before work also reported higher morning focus than employees who did not drink tea. Therefore, the company should encourage all employees to drink tea before work, because doing so will improve focus.
Question: The argument is most vulnerable to criticism because it
(A) treats an observed association as sufficient to establish causation without ruling out confounding or selection effects (B) fails to establish that tea is more enjoyable than other morning drinks (C) assumes that every employee currently drinks a beverage before work (D) draws a conclusion about employee morale from evidence about productivity (E) overlooks the possibility that tea is unavailable at the workplace

Step 1: Find the conclusion
The company should encourage tea drinking because doing so will improve focus.
Step 2: Identify the evidence
Employees who reported drinking tea also reported higher morning focus.
Step 3: Name the gap
The argument treats the observed association as sufficient to establish that tea causes focus. It does not rule out a selection explanation: perhaps naturally focused employees are more likely to choose tea. It also does not rule out confounding: another factor, such as a structured morning routine, might lead employees both to drink tea and to report better focus.
Step 4: Test the choices
- (A) identifies the precise problem: association alone does not establish causation when confounding or selection effects remain possible.
- (B) is irrelevant. Enjoyment is not part of the reasoning.
- (C) is unnecessary. The company can encourage tea without everyone already drinking something.
- (D) changes the topic from focus to morale.
- (E) concerns implementation, not the support for the conclusion.

A four-week Logical Reasoning practice plan
Week 1: Learn the argument map
Complete small untimed sets. For each argument, write the conclusion, premises, and unstated gap. Then explain why the wrong answers fail.
Prioritize flaw, strengthen, weaken, and assumption questions. They train the central relationship between evidence and conclusion.
Week 2: Build question-type recognition
Use mixed drills of 10 to 15 questions. Before reading answers, label the task: flaw, necessary assumption, inference, method, or another type.
